I usually complain that Hollywood is running out of ideas. But looking at the 2026 release calendar, I have to admit: I’m excited.

We are about to witness a historic showdown. In my opinion, 2026 isn’t just “another year” for animation; it is the Battle of the Titans. We have Shrek, Toy Story, and Mario all landing in the same year.

Here is my breakdown of the movies I’m actually planning to watch—and the ones I’m skeptical about.

1. Aang: The Last Airbender (January 2026)

The Hype: We are finally going back to the original Avatar universe. My Take: As someone who grew up watching the original series, this is personal. We’ve been burned by bad live-action adaptations before. However, this is an animated feature produced by the original creators. I have high hopes that this will finally do justice to the bending world.

2. Hoppers (March 6, 2026)

The Hype: Pixar’s newest original idea about a girl transferring her brain into a robot beaver. My Analysis: Pixar has been hit-or-miss lately (Elemental was good, Lightyear was… not). Actually, I think Hoppers is their chance to prove they can still tell weird, unique stories. I’m rooting for this one because we need more original ideas in a sea of sequels.

3. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 (April 2026)

The Hype: The first one made a billion dollars. The sequel is inevitable. My Verdict: Let’s be honest—the plot won’t be Shakespeare. But it doesn’t need to be. If they introduce Yoshi (which is rumored), I’ll be there on opening day. It’s pure, nostalgic fun.

4. Toy Story 5 (June 19, 2026)

The Hype: Woody and Buzz are back. Again. My Honest Opinion: Do we really need this? Toy Story 3 was a perfect ending. Toy Story 4 was a nice epilogue. However, Pixar rarely fails with this franchise. My worry is that they are stretching the story too thin just to sell merchandise. I’ll watch it, but I’m going in with low expectations.

5. Shrek 5 (July 1, 2026)

The Hype: After 16 years, the Ogre returns. My Take: This is the movie that will break the internet. The memes alone will be legendary. Actually, the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish proved that DreamWorks still knows how to handle this universe. If the animation style is anything like The Last Wish, this could easily be the Movie of the Year.

6. PAW Patrol 3 (July 31, 2026)

The Hype: The pups are back for a theatrical release. My Verdict: If you are a parent (or have nieces and nephews), you don’t have a choice—you are seeing this. From a business perspective, this franchise is a juggernaut. It knows exactly who its audience is and delivers every time.

7. The Cat in the Hat (March 6, 2026)

The Hype: Warner Bros is taking a swing at Dr. Seuss. My Take: Competing directly with Pixar’s Hoppers (releasing the same day) is a bold move. It will be interesting to see which one wins the family audience: the classic book adaptation or the new Pixar concept.

Conclusion: The Winner?

Who wins 2026? My Prediction: Shrek 5 takes the box office crown, but Aang wins the hearts of the fans.

It’s going to be an expensive year for movie tickets, but for animation fans, it looks absolutely worth it.
