India unveiled Vastav AI, its first indigenous cloud-based deepfake detection system. Developed by the cybersecurity firm Zero Defend Security, Vastav AI is designed to address the growing challenges posed by AI-generated manipulated media.

What Is Vastav AI?

Vastav AI—derived from the Hindi word for “reality”—is an AI-powered forensic tool that detects manipulated or synthetically generated videos, images, and audio. Unlike traditional tools requiring technical expertise, Vastav AI is cloud-based, allowing easy access and integration into systems such as fact-checking portals, media workflows, and law enforcement cyber units.

How It Works

Vastav AI employs advanced deep learning algorithms to analyze digital media for signs of manipulation. Its key features include:

  • Frame-by-frame video analysis: Detecting digital artifacts or pixel inconsistencies.
  • Audio-visual mismatch detection: Identifying when lips move out of sync with speech.
  • Facial anomaly detection: Spotting glitches in expressions, lighting, or reflections.
  • Metadata analysis: Examining hidden information like timestamps or file histories.
  • Tampering probability scores: Providing a percentage likelihood that content is fake.

These analyses happen in near real-time, with results delivered through a user-friendly dashboard.

Why India Needed Vastav AI

India faces unique challenges that make it vulnerable to deepfake threats:

  • A massive social media user base.
  • Frequent election cycles.
  • Viral content sharing across platforms, especially messaging apps.
  • Multilingual content and diverse accents.
  • Risks of misinformation influencing social and political stability.

Vastav AI addresses these challenges by providing a localized solution tailored to India’s context.

Recognition and Impact

Vastav AI has already gained significant recognition:

  • CIDECODE Hackathon: Awarded for its potential in combating misinformation and cyber threats.
  • Cybersecurity Reports: Highlighted as a key tool against AI-driven fraud, especially given the surge in deepfake incidents.

Access and Availability

Vastav AI is currently offered free of charge to law enforcement and government agencies to support efforts against digital fraud and disinformation. A subscription-based model for enterprise users is planned, expanding access to its forensic capabilities while ensuring responsible usage.
