OpenAI has announced a landmark partnership with South Korean tech leaders Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to strengthen its ambitious Stargate infrastructure project. The collaboration is designed to secure critical memory chip supplies, build advanced data centers, and accelerate the global rollout of next-generation AI infrastructure.

The Stargate Vision

Stargate represents OpenAI’s long-term strategy to create a massive, reliable, and scalable backbone for frontier AI systems. With computing demands rising at an exponential pace, the project aims to integrate cutting-edge hardware, data centers, and energy solutions into a single cohesive infrastructure. The initiative is projected to involve investments worth hundreds of billions of dollars over the coming years.

Why Samsung and SK Hynix

Both Samsung and SK Hynix are global leaders in semiconductor technology, particularly in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DRAM production—components that are critical for AI workloads. The partnership ensures OpenAI has a steady pipeline of advanced chips to feed its training clusters and AI supercomputers.

Estimates suggest the collaboration could secure hundreds of thousands of memory wafers monthly, potentially accounting for a significant share of global DRAM capacity. This scale reflects just how much compute power the next wave of AI models will require.

Building Data Centers in South Korea

Beyond chip supply, OpenAI and its Korean partners are exploring the construction of large-scale AI data centers in South Korea. These facilities may include novel approaches such as floating or marine-based data centers, leveraging Korea’s expertise in shipbuilding and engineering. Such designs could help address land shortages, cooling challenges, and energy efficiency requirements.
