Microsoft is on the verge of completing its $3.3 billion AI data center in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, marking a major milestone in the company’s AI infrastructure expansion. The facility is expected to become operational in early 2026 and is poised to be one of the most advanced AI data centers in the world.

A Glimpse into the Fairwater Data Center

Named “Fairwater,” the data center spans 315 acres and encompasses three buildings totaling 1.2 million square feet. It is equipped with hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GB200 and GB300 GPUs, connected by a fiber optic network extensive enough to circle the Earth 4.5 times. This setup aims to deliver performance ten times greater than today’s fastest supercomputers.

Commitment to Sustainability

Microsoft has emphasized sustainability in the design of the Fairwater facility. The data center utilizes a closed-loop cooling system that recycles 90% of its water, making it one of the largest water-cooled chiller facilities globally. Additionally, the facility will be powered largely by renewable energy, including a 250MW solar project, demonstrating Microsoft’s commitment to eco-friendly operations.

Economic and Community Impact

The Fairwater data center is expected to create approximately 800 permanent jobs and 3,000 construction jobs at its peak. Microsoft has also pledged to support local communities through ecological restoration efforts and workforce development programs. These initiatives aim to strengthen sectors such as biohealth, personalized medicine, and advanced manufacturing in the region.

Expansion Plans

Building on the success of the Fairwater project, Microsoft plans to invest an additional $4 billion to construct a second AI data center in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. This new facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2028, bringing Microsoft’s total investment in the state to over $7 billion.

Microsoft’s Fairwater AI data center represents a significant step in the company’s strategy to dominate AI infrastructure globally. With cutting-edge computing power, a commitment to sustainability, and a positive local economic impact, the facility sets a new benchmark for large-scale AI operations. This project underscores Microsoft’s dedication to combining technological advancement with environmental responsibility and community support, shaping the future of AI deployment in the enterprise sector.
