What Is the BRAIN Lab
BITS School of Management (BITSoM) has officially launched the BRAIN Lab — short for BITS Research in AI and Innovation. This centre focuses on equipping future business leaders with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in AI-driven business environments.
Focus Areas & Activities
The BRAIN Lab operates across three key pillars: teaching, research, and outreach. Its main activities include:
- Developing AI-focused courses to give students hands-on experience with real-world applications.
- Conducting industry-aligned research in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), and banking/financial services (BFSI).
- Organizing AI project and product development competitions.
- Supporting AI startups through mentoring and collaboration.
- Engaging with industry and government for partnerships and policy guidance.
Strategic Significance

Business leaders increasingly need to understand AI’s technical and managerial aspects. The lab equips students with both sets of skills. - Industry Alignment
Research and projects are closely tied to real-world needs, improving graduate employability and fostering business-ready innovations. - Knowledge Repository
The lab will maintain a collection of AI use-cases to benefit students, researchers, and businesses, promoting collaboration and best practices. - Responsible AI
Emphasis on ethical AI ensures students reflect on societal impact, fairness, and responsible deployment. - Thought Leadership
Through conferences, continuing education, and industry partnerships, BITSoM positions itself as a leader in AI-integrated management education.
Challenges & Considerations
- Keeping curriculum and research aligned with rapidly evolving AI technologies.
- Ensuring adequate resources, including funding, compute infrastructure, and mentorship.
- Teaching ethical AI practices effectively alongside technical skills.
- Scaling the knowledge repository and industry collaborations meaningfully.
The BRAIN Lab is a timely initiative that could produce AI-literate business leaders capable of driving innovation. By blending management expertise with AI competency, BITSoM is setting a benchmark for business education in the era of artificial intelligence.
